Biographical data
Eredeti neve: Dlusztus Mátyás. Hat testvére volt. A feljegyzések szerint jó sportoló volt. 1928-tól Pécsett tanult. Előbb a Székesegyházi Énekiskola növendéke volt, majd a ciszterci rend középiskolájában, a Nagy Lajos Gimnáziumban érettségizett 1938-ban, kitüntetéssel. A ciszterci rendbe 1938. augusztus 29-én lépett be, majd első fogadalmat tett 1939. augusztus 30-án. A fogadalmát megújította 1942. augusztus 30-án. 1941-től Rómában tanult, itt valószínűleg 1943 elején hagyta el a ciszterci rendet, s belépett az oratóriánus rendbe. 1946. április 20-án Rómában szentelték pappá. Filozófiai, teológiai és szentírástudományi doktorátust is szerzett. P. Békés Gellért OSB-vel lefordította az Újszövetségi Szentírást. Az anyanyelvén kívül 16 nyelven tudott. A párizsi Sorbonne-on adott elő a Bibliáról; Ugandában, Kenyában, Nápolyban kapott egyetemi katedrát. Az oratóriánus rend elöljárója, általános kongresszusának elnöke volt, valamint a világiakkal foglalkozó pápai tanács tagja.
