Biographical data
Középiskolai tanulmányait a pécsi Pius Kollégiumban végezte, 1945-ben érettségizett. 1945. augusztus 14-én lépett be a rendbe Budapesten, 1947-ben bölcseleti tanulmányokat végzett Szegeden. 1949 februárjában disszidált, a budapest–bázeli gyorsvonat hálókocsija alatt, az akkumulátorok tetején. Néhány nap múlva Innsbruckba utazott, ahol a városon kívül fekvő Zenzenhofon talált új otthonra. Onnét július közepén az egész magyar közösség, kivéve azok, akik a tanév végén befejezték bölcseleti tanulmányaikat, az észak-olaszországi Chieribe ment. Itt fejezte be 1951-ben a bölcseleti tanulmányait. Az év őszétől kezdve a dél-németországi St. Blasienben volt nevelő egy kollégium internátusában. Később a belgiumi Leuvenbe került, és a híres katolikus egyetemen három félévig pszichológiát és pedagógiát tanult, amit Münchenben folytatott, és 1957 júliusában megszerezte a doktorátust. 1956 végétől nagyszámú magyar menekült egyetemista között végzett segítő tevékenységet. Egyetemi tanulmányai befejeztével a külföldi magyar jezsuiták főnöke, a kanadai Torontóba küldte a teológia elvégzésére. Ott kezdett el angolul is tanulni. 1960. június 19-én szentelték pappá. 1961-ben az észak-amerikai Clevelandbe került a harmadik próbaévre. 1962-től New Yorkban a jezsuiták Fordham Egyetemén lett a külföldi magyar rendtartomány főnökének titkára. 1968-77-ben a külföldi magyar jezsuiták főnöke lett, de továbbra is tanított. Rendi feladatai mellett komoly lelkipásztori munkát is végzett.
