Biographical data
The only Roman Catholic diocesan bishop of Hungarian descent in North America. He emigrated to the United States with his family at the age of three.
He completed his schooling in Superior and was ordained a priest there at the Sacred Heart Cathedral on May 3, 1927. He became a papal prelate in 1946. On January 27, 1954, Pope Pius XII appointed him a diocesan bishop.
His episcopal consecration took place on March 25, 1954.
He was the patron of the American Hungarian Catholic League.
Although he did not participate in Hungarian pastoral work, according to the MPE obituary:
“With his unexpected death, the Catholic League and the American Hungarian community lost a great patron.”
He died suddenly of a heart attack on August 27, 1959, while listening to music.
His grave is located at Calvary Cemetery in Superior, WI.
