His father was Ferenc Burg, his mother was Helena Pettko, and he had fifteen siblings. He completed his secondary education at the Piarist Gymnasium in Trenčín. He was ordained a priest on September 10, 1829.
In 1838, he left his post and announced his intention to resign from the priesthood and convert to the Reformed Church, which caused a national scandal.
Two years later, he repented and announced that, as an act of penance, he would go to the United States as a missionary. He arrived in New York, NY, on the ship Z Ring on October 19, 1841.
He was one of the first Hungarian missionaries in the United States, as well as the first to die there, and he is buried there.
