His parents were Lajos Csizmazia, a teacher, and Gizella Gocsal. He completed his secondary education at the Cistercian High School in Budapest. He entered the Cistercian Order on August 29, 1933. He studied philosophy and theology in Zirc, then earned a teaching degree in Latin, Greek, and German at Pázmány Péter Royal University, and in 1943, he received his doctorate in Latin from the same institution. He took his simple vows on August 29, 1934, and his perpetual vows on December 30, 1939. He was ordained a priest on June 23, 1940, by Bishop Gyula Czapik of Veszprém. At the time the Cistercian Order was banned, he studied Russian, taught the Russian language, and secretly assisted those interested in the Cistercian Order. He left Hungary in 1965. He transferred his vow of stability to the Abbey of Dallas on January 5, 1969.
