His parents were Jakab Ditelján and Petronella Csilics. He was ordained a priest in Baja on June 24, 1902. He first arrived in the United States on November 19, 1923, aboard the Tyrrhenia, and returned to Europe a second time on September 12, 1924, aboard the Aquitania. In 1927, he was awarded a doctorate in musicology. He arrived permanently on May 1, 1929, aboard the steamship Ile de France. He served as the celebrant at the dedication ceremony for St. Stephen’s School in Passaic on September 19, 1937. In addition to his priestly ministry, he was also a musician, pianist, and conductor.
