Biographical data
He was born into a farming family. He completed his elementary and secondary education in Nyírbátor and Nagykálló. In 1920, he entered the Order of Saint Basil. He spent his novitiate years at the monastery in Munkács-Csernekhegy, where he took his first vows on October 14, 1922. He completed his philosophical studies at the Basilian Order’s college in Kristinopol between 1922 and 1924. He studied theology from 1924 to 1927 at the Pontifical Gregorian University (Pontificia Università Gregoriana) in Rome, while a student at the German-Hungarian College (Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum). He made his solemn perpetual vows in Máriapócs on October 18, 1925. István Miklósy, Bishop of Hajdúdorog, ordained him a priest on September 8, 1927. From 1928 to 1932, he taught philosophy at the Order’s monastery in Kisberezna, and subsequently served as novice master at the monastery in Munkács-Csernekhegy. From September 12, 1932, he was prior of the monastery in Máriapócs, and from 1933, prior of the Hungarian branch of the Basilian Order. On March 25, 1939, Pope Pius XI appointed him bishop of Hajdúdorog. His consecration took place in Máriapócs on May 14, 1939. In 1944, he served as apostolic administrator of the Greek Catholic Diocese of Munkács, and from 1946 to 1972, of the Apostolic Exarchate of Miskolc. In 1965, he participated in the final session of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). On November 19, 1965, in St. Peter’s Basilica, in the presence of the Council Fathers, he celebrated a Greek Catholic Divine Liturgy entirely in Hungarian. He is buried in the crypt of the Basilica of Máriapócs.
