Sus padres eran László Balás, empleado bancario, y Mária Borbély.
Ingresó en la orden en Zirc el 29 de agosto de 1948. Hizo sus primeros votos el 30 de agosto de 1949. Tras la disolución de las órdenes religiosas, desertó. Hizo sus votos perpetuos el 2 de enero de 1954 en Casamari, con estabilidad en Zirc. Fue ordenado sacerdote el 29 de junio de 1954 en Stams, Austria. A partir de 1962 estudió filosofía en la Universidad de San Anselmo de Roma, donde obtuvo el título de doctor. Posteriormente, impartió clases durante dos años en la Universidad de San Anselmo de Roma. Fue miembro y, posteriormente, presidente de la North American Patristic Society entre 1982 y 1984.
Su tumba se encuentra en Irving, Texas, en la cripta del monasterio cisterciense.
