Ses parents étaient László Balás, employé de banque, et Mária Borbély.
Il est entré dans les ordres à Zirc le 29 août 1948. Il a prononcé ses premiers vœux le 30 août 1949. Après la dissolution des ordres religieux, il a fait défection. Il a prononcé ses vœux perpétuels le 2 janvier 1954 à Casamari, avec stabilité à Zirc. Il a été ordonné prêtre à Stams, en Autriche, le 29 juin 1954. À partir de 1962, il a étudié la philosophie à l’université Saint-Anselme de Rome, où il a obtenu un doctorat. Il a ensuite enseigné pendant deux ans à l’université Saint-Anselme de Rome. Il a été membre, puis président de 1982 à 1984, de la North American Patristic Society.
Sa tombe se trouve à Irving, au Texas, dans la crypte du monastère cistercien.
