Biographical data
János Bali SBD’s younger brother. He entered the order in 1915, and after graduating from high school, he served as a novice in Ensdorf from 1920 to 1921. From 1926 onward, he studied theology in Turin. He was ordained a priest in 1929, and in 1932 he was sent to Brazil to minister to the Hungarian community. Due to poor health, he returned to Hungary in 1937. After the suppression of religious orders, he served in the Archdiocese of Eger. At his final post, he renovated the church and the parish house. A few days after the ceremony, he fell ill and died in the ambulance while being transported to the hospital.
According to the obituary of the Hungarian Salesian Order:
He was born in Alsóság on Corpus Christi Day. He likely followed his older brother’s example and entered the Salesian Institute, which had moved from Cavaglia to Szentkereszt, where he began high school in 1915. In 1920–1921, he began his novitiate in Ensdorf. In the fall of 1926, his superiors sent him to Turin to study theology. He was ordained a priest in 1929. With courage and firm resolve, he undertook the pastoral care of Hungarian emigrants in Brazil, who were scattered across a vast territory (1932–1937). Due to his failing health, he was unable to continue this work after five years. Upon returning home, he was assigned to the novitiate that had opened in Mezőnyárád, and from the following year he served as novice master (1938–1944). He also inspired the faithful in the area with the Pilgrimage of the Virgin Mary, Help of Christians. He served as parish priest in Borsodnádasd for eight years. From there, he was transferred to a difficult assignment: Tiszakanyar. With youthful vigor, he also performed hard physical labor in his garden to provide for his livelihood. His door and his heart were always open to everyone. In 1973, he was transferred to Vécs. His parishioners admired and respected the elderly priest, who had restored the parish building and the church during those heroic four years. The renovated church was his swan song. A few days after the ceremony, in the ambulance that had come for him, his heart stopped beating in the middle of the village.
