His father was Mihály Balogh, a priest, and his mother was Mária Kecskóvszky. He pursued his theological studies in Uzhhorod. On April 6, 1864, he was ordained a priest by Bazil Popovics, Bishop of Mukachevo. His wife was Irma Irén Bacsinszky of Bacsina (1843–1917), daughter of Jenő Bacsinszky, a priest, and Apollónia Jaromisz. They had five children, including Bálint Balogh, a Greek Catholic priest.
