As a seminarian in 1944, he assisted Apostolic Nuncio Angelo Rotta in rescuing Jews. For this, he was later honored with the title “Righteous Among the Nations.” He was taken prisoner by the Soviets and was ordained a priest on July 20, 1948. From November 5, 1948, to August 1, 1953, he served a prison sentence for his pastoral work among young people. Due to his participation in the 1956 Revolution, he left for the West, where he resigned from the priesthood. His wife was Katalin Kőrösy, whom he married on July 6, 1957, in Rome. They had two children.
