His father was Sándor Bodnár, a Greek Catholic priest, and his mother was Márta Papp. He had five siblings.
He attended the Franciscan High School in Esztergom and later completed his college studies in Nyíregyháza. His wife is Judit Petróczi; their children are Julianna and István. He was ordained a priest by Bishop Miklós Dudás on July 30, 1961. He emigrated to Canada in 1969.
From 1976, he served as dean of the Hungarian Greek Catholics; in 1982, he became a mitred archpriest and vicar general of the Hungarian Greek Catholics.
