Biographical data
András Suba Arnold was born on April 12, 1886, in Csepe, Ugocsa County. His father, György Suba, was a Greek Catholic priest, and his mother was Paulina Gebe; he grew up in a family of thirteen children. He completed his elementary and secondary education in Munkács and Ungvár, then pursued theological studies in Ungvár. On October 27, 1910, he married Erzsébet Holosnyay. Bishop Gyula Firczák of Munkács ordained him a priest on December 11, 1910.
He arrived in the United States with his wife on January 18, 1911. During the first two decades of his ministry in the United States, he served in several Greek Catholic communities in the states of Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania. Contemporary sources mention him in Braddock in 1911. He founded the St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic parish in Gary and played a significant role in the construction of churches for the Greek Catholic communities in McKees Rocks, Aliquippa, and Wall, Pennsylvania. In Aliquippa, he was the first pastor of the new St. George parish, and on April 28, 1929, arriving from Rankin, he celebrated the first Divine Liturgy for the Greek Catholic community in Wall.
In 1932, he was appointed pastor of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Freeland, Pennsylvania. He led the parish for twenty-nine years. In 1945, he founded the parish school, and in 1957, under his leadership, the interior of the church was completely renovated, including the installation of a new marble altar and sanctuary. On December 11, 1960, he celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. He retired in September 1961 and subsequently remained the parish’s pastor emeritus.
His wife, Erzsébet Holosnyay, passed away on January 13, 1962. Suba died in August 1964, at the age of 78, at St. Joseph Hospital in Hazleton after a two-week hospital stay. His son, Arnold, lived in Pittsburgh; at the time of his death, he was survived by three grandchildren.
