József Ádám, referred to in American sources as Rev. Joseph L. Adam, was a Hungarian Roman Catholic priest who was presumably born on March 28, 1915. The location and exact date of his ordination are currently unknown. In the second half of the 1940s, he served as an assistant pastor to Monsignor Ernő Horváth at Our Lady of the Hungarians Church in Chicago. On May 23, 1951, Bishop Martin D. McNamara of Joliet appointed him as the first pastor of the St. Stephen Hungarian Catholic Parish in Joliet. The new church was consecrated on June 24, 1951, and the parish’s new rectory was blessed on October 19, 1952. József Ádám led the Hungarian community in Joliet for more than twenty-eight years. In addition to his pastoral work, he also served as chaplain to the Joliet police and fire departments, at least during the 1970s. On June 27, 1976, while still serving as parish priest, he participated in the twenty-fifth anniversary of the church’s consecration; at that time, the parish comprised approximately 85 families. He passed away in Joliet on August 1, 1979. His place of birth, original diocese, ordination details, and place of burial require further research.
