Biographical data
His parents were farmers. He was ordained a priest on June 28, 1931. In 1936, he became the head of the Wallingford parish, which had broken away from the Catholic Church; he was subsequently suspended and left the priesthood. During World War II, he served as a fifth-class technician (in practice, a corporal). On June 18, 1936, he married Helen Marie Gerish in Luzerne, PA.
