He was born in the United States and later returned to Hungary. His original surname was Gülch. He studied theology in Budapest from 1938 to 1943. He was ordained a priest in Budapest on November 7, 1943. In 1944, he earned a doctorate in theology in Budapest. At an unknown date, he served a prison sentence.
