György Berzinec (known in American sources as Rev. George Gregory Berzinec) was born on April 18, 1907, in Oxford, New Jersey. He belonged to a generation of priests in the American Greek Catholic/Byzantine Catholic community. He served as a married pastor; his wife’s name was Irén, and they had four children.
For a long time, he served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army, serving with various military units for nearly three decades. He served during several periods of war.
His son, William Berzinec, was killed in action as an American military officer during the Vietnam War.
In the later years of his life, he was associated with the Byzantine Catholic Church center in Passaic, as well as with the Hungarian and Ruthenian Catholic communities in New Jersey.
He passed away on May 14, 1988, in Orange, Florida. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery alongside his wife and son.
