A second-generation Hungarian born to Hungarian parents. He was ordained a priest in Pittsburgh, PA, on February 24, 1952. He earned a licentiate from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome and was subsequently appointed rector of the SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary. He participated in the reform of the Eastern Code, for which Pope Paul VI conferred upon him the title of papal prelate. Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop on June 14, 1983. His episcopal consecration took place on August 23, 1983.
