György Pogány was born in Budapest on September 29, 1912, to parents of Jewish descent who had converted to Catholicism. His twin brother, Miklós—later known by his American name, Nicholas—also received a Catholic upbringing but returned to the Jewish faith after World War II. György studied theology in Szeged and later at the Pázmáneum in Vienna.

After his ordination, he served as an assistant pastor in Hosszúpályi and then in Nagyszénás as a priest of the Diocese of Nagyvárad. Due to the anti-Jewish laws and the threat of persecution, he left Hungary during World War II and found refuge in Italy. In San Giovanni Rotondo, he served as a pastor and translator alongside Padre Pio and the Capuchin community; and for a time served as Father Pio’s secretary. According to sources, he celebrated Mass, heard confessions, administered the sacraments to the sick, and also performed interpreting duties.

In 1957, he moved to the United States. In New Jersey, he became the pastor of Assumption Church in Irvington. A local press source from 1970 definitely mentions him in this capacity. In the later stages of his life, he held the title of monsignor, but the exact rank of his honorary title still needs to be clarified. He was also associated with American Hungarian Catholic organizations; according to available records, he served as treasurer of the American Hungarian Catholic League in 1983. He died in New Jersey in 1993.
