Biographical data
His father was János Pordán, a small-scale craftsman, and his mother was Júlia Schreiner. He had three siblings. He graduated from high school in Budapest and then became a student at the Central Seminary. He earned a doctorate in philosophy from Pázmány Péter University. He was ordained a priest on November 7, 1943. From 1947 to 1950, he was on academic leave in Rome, where he earned a doctorate in theology. In 1950, the Hungarian government did not renew his passport, making his return home impossible. Through Vatican mediation, he moved to Canada. As an amateur photographer, he held numerous exhibitions. Beginning in 1956, he also served as the Hungarian pastor for the Diocese of Gaspé. From 1965 to 1970, he served as a church advisor to the diocese’s teachers’ union, and from 1979 to 1982, he was a member of the diocesan presbyteral senate. He retired in 2005.
