His father, János Bobák, was a priest, and his brother Sándor also served in the United States.
From 1939 to 1943, he studied theology in Rome as a student at the Pontifical Hungarian Institute. He earned a doctorate in canon law. During his time in Pittsburgh, he also directed a choir. Neither his place of birth nor the location of his ordination can be identified.
