Pál Sántha (Istensegíts, Bukovina, November 1, 1890 – Regina, Saskatchewan, April 9, 1962) was a priest of the Diocese of Esztergom, Doctor of Theology, Papal Chamberlain, dean, and one of the most prominent pastors and organizers of the Hungarian community in Canada. For nearly four decades, he served among the Hungarian settlers in the province of Saskatchewan, while also playing an active role in Canadian Hungarian public life and the Hungarian Catholic press.
He was born in Istensegítsen, Bukovina, on November 1, 1890. He completed his high school studies in Nagyszombat, where he graduated in 1909. He studied theology in Budapest and was ordained a priest in Esztergom on July 22, 1913. During his studies, he earned a doctorate in theology.
He began his priestly ministry in Magyardiószeg as an assistant pastor (1913–1915), then served as an assistant pastor and, concurrently, as a public guardian in Budapest-Tabán (1915–1917). He subsequently served as prefect at the Szent Imre College in Buda (1917–1923), where he was involved in the education of Catholic youth.
In 1923, he emigrated to Canada. His first assignment was in Lestock, Saskatchewan, where he began his ministry as a parish priest. As early as the following year, he became one of the leading priests of the Hungarian mission in the Diocese of Regina. Between 1924 and 1932, he worked as a pastor and missionary in Regina, while regularly visiting Hungarian settlements in Saskatchewan.
His most significant post was in Stockholm (Saskatchewan), where he served as parish priest from 1924 until his death—a period of nearly thirty-eight years. Under his leadership, the parish became one of the most important centers for Hungarian Catholics in the region. In 1936, he was appointed dean; that same year, Pope Pius XI conferred upon him the title of Monsignor in recognition of his work on behalf of the Hungarian Catholic community.
His pastoral work was not limited to Hungarian parishioners. He ministered in four languages, regularly visited rural mission stations, and did significant work among the Indigenous communities of Saskatchewan as well. The Indigenous communities around Stockholm elected him an honorary chief, which was a rare honor for a Catholic priest.
He was one of the best-known figures in Canadian Hungarian public life. As a regular contributor to the *Kanadai Magyar Újság* (Canadian Hungarian Newspaper), he published travelogues and articles on religious topics. In 1937, as a representative of the Hungarian Catholic Church, he attended the International Eucharistic Congress held in Manila, traveling home via China and Japan. He published detailed travelogues about his experiences, which aroused great interest among Hungarian readers in Canada.
He also played a prominent role in documenting the history of the Hungarian community in Western Canada.
