A Roman Catholic priest of Hungarian descent who spent his entire priestly ministry in the United States. For nearly two decades, he was the pastor of the Hungarian Catholic community in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and served as the last pastor of St. Stephen’s Hungarian Parish. His death resulted from a tragic personal crisis that deeply shook the local Hungarian community.
He was born on October 2, 1915, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He came from a family of Hungarian immigrants and discovered his calling to the priesthood within the local Hungarian Catholic community.
No publicly available information has yet survived regarding his studies or the circumstances of his ordination.
In 1947, he was appointed to St. Stephen’s Hungarian Parish in Bridgeport, where he initially served as an assistant pastor or assistant pastor. By 1952, he was certainly the parish priest. Under his leadership, the St. Stephen Parish remained one of the most important centers of Hungarian Catholic life in Connecticut. According to the Hungarian émigré press of the time, he was not only the leader of liturgical life but also an active organizer of the parish’s cultural, charitable, and community events.
During his time as pastor, the Hungarian community in Bridgeport gradually dwindled. Assimilation, changes in the city’s demographics, and a decline in the number of Hungarian parishioners made it increasingly difficult to maintain the Hungarian national parish. Nevertheless, he remained steadfast in his support of his parishioners and led the parish until his death.
He passed away in Bridgeport on August 18, 1971, at the age of 55. His death occurred under tragic circumstances. According to several independent sources among Hungarian émigrés, he had been struggling with severe depression for a long time, which ultimately led to his suicide. His death caused deep shock within the Hungarian Catholic community in Bridgeport, which lost its independence shortly thereafter.
