He was a Greek Catholic priest of Hungarian descent, a professor of theology, a historian of liturgy, a religious writer, and an editor. In the United States, he was known as Basil Shereghy and later as Monsignor Basil Shereghy.
His father was András Sereghy, a Greek Catholic priest, and his mother was Izabella Jaczkovics. He completed his high school studies at the Beregszász Gymnasium, then studied theology in Uzhhorod, Olomouc, and Budapest. He earned his doctorate in theology in 1942 upon completing his studies. Sándor Sztojka, the Greek Catholic bishop of Munkács, ordained him a priest on March 29, 1942. He subsequently taught at the Greek Catholic seminary in Uzhhorod.
Following World War II, at the onset of communist persecution of the Greek Catholic Church in Transcarpathia, he left his homeland. He arrived in the United States in 1946, where he entered the service of the Byzantine Catholic Church in Pittsburgh. At the St. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary in Pittsburgh, he taught language, liturgy, dogmatic theology, and Eastern theology, and was also involved in the spiritual guidance of the seminarians. During his time in the United States, he became one of the leading theological and liturgical authorities of the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Church.
In 1957, he became pastor of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Minneapolis. During his tenure, he placed great emphasis on strengthening the church’s Byzantine character, restoring Eastern liturgical and artistic traditions, and placing icons within the church. He served in Minneapolis at least until the early 1960s.
By 1963 at the latest, he was already the pastor of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Hungarian Byzantine Catholic Church in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. The parish was an important religious and cultural center for the Hungarian Greek Catholics in the area. Sereghy not only carried out his pastoral ministry in English but also supported the preservation of the Hungarian language, Hungarian church traditions, and the community’s tangible heritage. In the early 1980s, he continued to serve as pastor of the McKeesport parish.
Bazil Sereghy also played a significant role in the cultural and media life of the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh. He was one of the founding contributors to the church journal *Byzantine Catholic World*, established in 1956, and served as its editor from 1970 to 1986. In addition, he participated in the collection of Byzantine Catholic ecclesiastical and historical artifacts, and served as director and curator of the Archeparchial Museum.
His scholarly and popular works focused on the Byzantine Catholic liturgy, the history of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church, and the religious heritage of American Byzantine Catholic communities. His major works include the introductory book *What Are Greek Catholics?*, a study on priestly formation in Transcarpathia co-authored with Athanasius Pekar, the *Greek Catholic Dictionary* compiled with Vladimir Vancik, *The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom*, *Ruthenian Form*, *The Liturgical Year of the Byzantine-Slavonic Rite*, *Bishop Basil Takach: The Good Shepherd*, and *The Byzantine Catholics*, published in 1981. The latter work was later republished as a brief summary of the history of the American Byzantine Catholic Church.
As editor, he also compiled the historical album published to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the American Greek Catholic Fraternal Aid Societies. Among his last major works was *Fifty Years of Piety*, published in 1985, which chronicled the fifty-year history of the Greek Catholic pilgrimage in Uniontown.
Bazil Sereghy passed away on June 16, 1988, in Pittsburgh.
