His original name was Zsigmond Vella. He is listed as Vella in the Franciscan register; he likely changed his name after 1956. He entered the order on September 20, 1921. He took his perpetual vows on August 13, 1926. He was ordained a priest on February 12, 1928. He served as a missionary in China from 1938 to 1946, after which he went to the United States. In 1930, he won a quilt in the Piuma quilt design contest.
