Biographical data
Dr. Miklós Deák, known as Nicholas Deak in English-language sources, was born on October 3, 1944, in Kökényesd, in what was then the Szatmár County of Romania. He arrived in Canada on July 4, 1962, where he worked for General Motors for twenty-eight and a half years. He was a student at the University of St. Michael’s College. On July 31, 1991, he was ordained a Greek Catholic priest at the cathedral in Lemberg (now Lviv). From the time of his ordination until his death, he served as pastor of the Hungarian Greek Catholic Parish of St. John the Baptist in Welland. He served as dean of the Hungarian deanery of the Ukrainian Catholic Diocese of Toronto and Eastern Canada; in addition, he served as pastor and later as administrator of the Greek Catholic Parish of St. Michael the Archangel in Hamilton. With a rite license, he was also authorized to celebrate Roman Catholic liturgies and provided pastoral assistance at the Roman Catholic parish of Our Lady of the Hungarians in Welland. In June 2008, he was elevated to the rank of mitred bishop. He was a regular participant in Hungarian priestly gatherings in Canada and North America; in 2016, he celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. His wife was Etelka Balogh; they had two children, Anna and Joseph, and three grandchildren. In 2018, during a visit to Hungary, he was involved in a serious car accident. Miklós Deák passed away on November 18, 2024, at the age of eighty, at the hospital in Welland. His funeral service was held on November 30 at St. John the Baptist Church, after which he was laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery in Welland.
