Biographical data
An Argentine Roman Catholic priest of Hungarian descent, he is the pastor of the Diocese of San Roque de Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña. He was born in Argentina to a family of Hungarian immigrants and carries out his priestly ministry in his native province of Chaco.
He was born on July 4 in the town of Coronel Du Graty in the province of Chaco. His father was István Szabó and his mother was Zsuzsanna Varga, who settled in Argentina as Hungarian immigrants. Of their four children, Esteban is the third. The family preserved its Hungarian identity and religious faith; even in her old age, his mother continued to recite the Lord’s Prayer in Hungarian.
He chose his priestly vocation in his homeland. As a priest of the Diocese of San Roque de Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña, he was ordained on May 27, 1995, at the Church of Asunción de María in Coronel du Graty. His ordaining bishop was José Lorenzo Sartori.
He carried out his pastoral ministry in the northern part of Chaco Province, in the El Impenetrable region, one of Argentina’s most remote areas with a significant indigenous population. For many years, he served as pastor of the San Antonio de Padua parish in Villa Río Bermejito, where he provided pastoral care for an extensive mission territory. In addition, he regularly participated in the religious life of the surrounding communities, including Juan José Castelli.
At the end of 2024, he received a new assignment: he was appointed pastor of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Parish in Campo Largo, where he currently serves. He continues to carry out his pastoral work among the Spanish-speaking Catholic communities of Hungarian descent in the province of Chaco.
Although he is proud of his Hungarian heritage, he rarely appears in public life. Attempts have been made on several occasions to contact him as part of research on the Hungarian diaspora, but these have not yet been successful.
