His parents were Rezső Stockinger and Irma Nagel; he had two siblings. He completed his secondary education at the Jesuit Pius High School in Pécs. On August 14, 1933, he entered the Jesuit Order. In 1936, he changed his name to Cser. He volunteered for the mission in China and departed in August 1939 with three companions (György Császár SJ, Pál Rab SJ, and Tibor Vajda SJ). He was ordained a priest in Shanghai on June 6, 1945. In 1949, he first went to Canada and later lived in the United States. He also served as procurator for the Jesuit mission in China. In addition to this work, he helped distribute the newspaper *A Szív* and was primarily engaged in writing. He had been writing poetry since his youth. He spent the final years of his life in the nursing home at Fordham University.
