Jenő Gáspár Balázs Borsányi, OFM, was born on November 3, 1890, in Szany. His father was István Borsányi, and his mother was Julianna Pleskó. He had five siblings. He entered the Capistran Province of the Franciscan Order on September 5, 1908, took his perpetual vows on September 7, 1913, and was ordained a priest on June 14, 1915.
During his ministry in Hungary, he served in several Franciscan friaries and pastoral posts, including Kaplony, Budapest, Kecskemét, Eger, Szolnok, Baja, Szeged, Szigetvár, and Hatvan.
In 1950, he emigrated to Peru, where he served as pastor to the Hungarian community in Lima. There he founded the Mindszenty Movement, which supported the Hungarian Church under communist persecution. In Peru, he was an honorary member of the Hungarian Cultural Circle and a regular member of the Lima Hungarian Radio Committee.
He was actively involved in journalism and literature: he was a contributor to the Tolnamegyei Közlöny, edited the Terciárius Közlöny, and later the Ferences Közlöny, and his writings also appeared in the Lelkészi Értesítő and the Magyar Papi Egység.
Some secondary sources refer to him as a Capuchin monk; however, based on surviving monastic and press sources, it is more likely that he was a member of the Capistran Province of the Franciscans (OFM).
On the day before his death, he heard confessions for three hours; he was a popular confessor whom many sought out. At five in the morning, he woke his fellow monk living in the neighboring cell, asking him to summon the superior; after the superior’s arrival, he received the Anointing of the Sick and then passed away peacefully.
Notes
According to other sources, he was a Capuchin monk.
