I suoi genitori erano l’ingegnere István Farkasfalvy (Findura) e Mária Knazoviczky. Il fratello del suo bisnonno era István Findura, sacerdote della diocesi di Rožňava. Suo nonno cambiò il proprio cognome in «Farkasfalvi» in base all’autorizzazione del Ministero dell’Interno n. 115638 del 1898. Suo padre lo modificò in “Farkasfalvy” con il permesso del Ministero dell’Interno n. 232069 del 1939. Sul ramo paterno, il vescovo beato Zoltán Meszlényi era un suo lontano cugino. Si diplomò al liceo benedettino di Pannonhalma, poi studiò giurisprudenza all’ELTE. Entrò nell’ordine cistercense il 19 marzo 1955. Poiché all’epoca l’ordine era vietato, poté farlo solo in segreto. Prese i primi voti il 1° settembre 1956. Nel 1956 lasciò il Paese e, su consiglio dei suoi superiori, disertò passando per l’Austria per raggiungere Roma. Ha completato i suoi studi all’Università Sant’Anselmo. Ha pronunciato i voti perpetui a Roma il 18 settembre 1960, poi è stato ordinato sacerdote a Lilienfeld, in Austria, il 13 luglio 1961 da Franz Žak, vescovo di St. Pölten. Nel 1962 emigrò negli Stati Uniti. Nel 2002 Papa Giovanni Paolo II lo nominò membro della Pontificia Commissione Biblica; tale incarico fu rinnovato da Papa Benedetto XVI nel 2008 per altri sei anni. Nel 2010 ha ricevuto il Premio Stephanus e nel 2012 la Croce al Merito di Seconda Classe dell’Ordine di Merito Ungherese. Il motto dell’abate è: Vitis vera.
