Biographical data

A Jesuit missionary, he was presumably born in Košice in 1713. According to a historical account written in Spanish, he joined the Society of Jesus in 1729. He is referred to as Felipe Ferder in Spanish-language sources.

He arrived in the Río de la Plata region in 1745, where he worked in the missions of the Paraguayan Jesuit province. He served in the Santo Tomé reduction for about five years and later became the superior of the Loreto mission. A travelogue from 1749–1753 also mentions him as the parish priest of Candelaria.

During the conflict that arose following the 1750 Spanish–Portuguese border treaty, he may have played a role in representing the interests of the Guaraní reductions. According to a later historical account, he estimated the assets of the missions affected by the territorial transfer to be at least 16 million pesos. A document from 1758 mentions him in connection with the spiritual care of the scattered indigenous people.

The 1767 anti-Jesuit expulsion decrees also affected him. According to a historical account, on August 13, 1768, he was still in Loreto, where he assisted in taking inventory of the mission’s assets. According to the scholarly literature, he subsequently returned to Hungary. The exact date of his return, as well as the place and time of his death, require further research.
