Biographical data
He was a student at the Pius College in Pécs and entered the Society of Jesus on August 14, 1939. He began his studies in philosophy in Košice and continued them in Pécs. He studied in Kalocsa for three years, then studied biology in Budapest, but was expelled from the university for political reasons. In 1949, he was one of the organizers of the escape of members of the order to the West, and he himself left the country at that time. He was assigned to Brazil in 1954. He was ordained a priest on June 21, 1955. As a university professor, he taught biology, zoology, cytology, and histology. He specialized in flatworms and was invited to lecture all over the world. Another important area of his work was regeneration research. Until 1994, the scientific literature recognized only two types of regeneration. He discovered the third type and presented it at the International Congress in Hiroshima, Japan, where he was awarded a gold medal for his work. About fifty species he discovered and described bear his name. He retired in 2000.
