Biographical data

Antal Arnold Bartoss was ordained a priest as a Franciscan friar on July 28, 1867. Even before his ordination, in 1866, he was appointed lecturer in philosophy, and in 1869 he became a lecturer in theology. From 1868 to 1869, he served as a tutor to István Rakovszky—who would later become a politician in the National Assembly and its president. In 1873, he was a religion teacher at a secondary school, and from 1874 to 1875, he served as a missionary in the United States. The location and details of his work in the United States are currently unknown. After his return, he served as a theology lecturer, religious education teacher, and hospital chaplain. In 1884, he became vicar of the Franciscan friary in Bratislava; from 1889, he served as its guardian; and from 1890, he became defensor of the province. In 1898, he was transferred to the Archdiocese of Esztergom, where he served as a catechist and hospital chaplain in Pozsony. From 1906 until his death, he served as chaplain and spiritual director at the Angyalföld Mental and Neurological Hospital in Budapest. He died in Budapest on September 16, 1910.
