Biographical data
Titular Bishop of Castellum Minus. Bishop of Hungarian Catholics living in exile (1989–2006). His mother’s name was Sarolta Stark. He completed his high school studies at the Fráter György High School in Miskolc and the Szent István High School in Kalocsa. He entered the Society of Jesus on August 4, 1949. Following the dissolution of the order in 1950, he studied philosophy at the Academy of Theology in Budapest. He was expelled from there as a novice; between 1952 and 1956, he worked as a surgical assistant at St. Stephen’s Hospital in Budapest, and from 1953 to 1955, he served as a conscripted soldier. He completed his studies in philosophy and theology in Germany and then in Toronto, Canada. On June 18, 1961, he was ordained a priest by Cardinal James Charles MacGuigan, then Archbishop of Toronto. In his doctoral dissertation, which he defended at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he focused on Eastern Syriac Eucharistic pneumatology. On August 12, 1989, Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Castellum Minus and bishop for Hungarians living in exile. His episcopal consecration took place in Toronto on November 4, 1989. During his episcopal ministry, as long as his health permitted, he visited the churches of the Hungarian community in the West and sought to address the increasingly pressing issue of succession. As he approached his 75th birthday, he submitted his resignation in accordance with canon law, which Pope Benedict XVI accepted on April 5, 2006. He passed away from respiratory failure following a prolonged illness.
