Biographical data
He began his high school studies in Gyulafehérvár, but due to the Treaty of Trianon, he graduated from the Reformed High School in Kisújszállás. At that time, as a student at Pázmány Péter University, he began studying to become a history and geography teacher, but soon entered the Jesuit Order. He completed his novitiate in Érd. From 1928, he studied philosophy in Szeged, and from 1931, he served for three years as a form teacher at the Szent István College in Kalocsa. He completed his theological studies in Innsbruck and then in Szeged. He was ordained a priest in 1937. He spent his third probationary year in Florence. Beginning in 1935, he became the second-in-command of KALOT alongside Jenő Kerkai. Toward the end of World War II, he slipped through the front lines to negotiate with the leadership of the Red Army and made several trips to the Vatican to deliver messages. It was during one such trip that he brought back the news of József Mindszenty’s appointment as Archbishop of Esztergom. His relationship with Mindszenty soon deteriorated, so—under pressure from Mindszenty—in 1947, instead of returning home from a trip to Rome, he departed for South America at the instruction of his superiors. There he sought to establish an organization similar to KALOT, but this effort failed, so he left the order in 1948. In recognition of his service, the Superior General sent him a doctorate in philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He married in 1948. In 1952, he joined the Freemasons under the name Sándor Varga in order to get to know them and bring them closer to the Catholic Church. In 1967, he was expelled from the organization due to unpaid dues. In 1968, he returned to Hungary and became an employee of Akadémiai Kiadó. He visited Rome on several occasions, briefing Rome and the Jesuit Superior General on the situation of the Hungarian Church. According to ABTL records, he was in contact with the Hungarian state security services starting in 1966; his task was to spread disinformation. Éva Petrás wrote a monograph about his life titled *Behind the Masks*.
