He completed his secondary education at the Pius College in Pécs, graduating in 1945.
He entered the order on August 14, 1945, in Budapest, and completed his studies in philosophy in Szeged in 1947. In February 1949, he defected, hiding under the sleeper car of the Budapest–Basel express train, on top of the batteries.
A few days later, he traveled to Innsbruck, where he found a new home in Zenzenhof, located outside the city. From there, in mid-July, the entire Hungarian community—except for those who had completed their philosophy studies at the end of the academic year—went to Chieri in northern Italy. There he completed his philosophy studies in 1951. Beginning in the fall of that year, he worked as a teacher at a boarding school in St. Blasien, southern Germany. Later, he moved to Leuven, Belgium, where he studied psychology and pedagogy for three semesters at the renowned Catholic university; he continued his studies in Munich and earned his doctorate in July 1957. From late 1956 onward, he provided assistance to a large number of Hungarian refugee university students.
Upon completing his university studies, the superior of the Hungarian Jesuits abroad sent him to Toronto, Canada, to study theology. There he also began learning English. He was ordained a priest on June 19, 1960. In 1961, he went to Cleveland, Ohio, for his third probationary year. From 1962, he served as secretary to the superior of the Hungarian Province abroad at Fordham University in New York. From 1968 to 1977, he served as superior of the Hungarian Jesuits abroad, but continued to teach. In addition to his religious duties, he also carried out significant pastoral work.
