Biographical data
His parents were István Juhász (Rosental) and Emilia Schoffan; he had three siblings. They were of Jewish descent, but he was baptized into the Reformed Church at the age of 18. His twin brother, István, became a Franciscan priest and served in the United States. He entered the order in 1929. He took his simple vows on August 16, 1930. He completed his studies in Szombathely. He took his solemn vows on September 17, 1933. He then studied at the order’s college in Rome. According to documents preserved in the Hungarian Franciscan Archives, on June 13, 1934, while preparing for ordination, he received a papal dispensation through the Franciscan Order’s headquarters. The document states that the candidate was born “in hebraismo” and received a Calvinist baptism at the age of 18; later, having renounced this, he entered the Franciscan Order in good faith, where he also received the clerical tonsure. After being conditionally re-admitted to the sacrament of baptism, he had to request a papal dispensation from the “irregularity” specified in Canon 985, §1 of the 1917 Code of Canon Law (which included the designations “haereticus” and “irregularis ex delicto”), as well as from Canon 987, §1 (the fact of having non-Catholic parents constituted an impediment to ordination); furthermore, his novitiate, simple vows, and solemn vows had to be retroactively regularized. According to the surviving certificate, Vince received the so-called minor orders on November 3, 1934, in the church of the Franciscan Antonianum College in Rome. He was ordained a priest on January 20, 1935, after which he served in the Holy Land. Between 1942 and 1945, he was interned in Emmaus at the local Franciscan monastery because he was a citizen of an enemy country. There he conducted archaeological excavations. From 1950, he spent a short time in Syria, but was expelled from there due to a lack of a visa. From 1952, he served in the Spanish province. After coming into conflict with the provincial leadership, he asked the Minister General to allow him to enter diocesan ministry, a request supported by the order’s leadership, with the stipulation that his permission would be valid for three years and that its purpose was to enable him to support his impoverished family who had remained in Hungary. He was received by the bishop of the Diocese of Pereira (Colombia). Later—at an unknown date—he moved to Venezuela. There is no information regarding the place or time of his death. As a scholar of the Holy Land, he wrote numerous publications on the subject.
