Os seus pais eram o tenente-coronel Ödön Kereszty e a professora Margit Csighy, de Cserei. Iniciou os seus estudos secundários no Colégio Cisterciense de Buda e, após a nacionalização deste, prosseguiu-os no Colégio Petőfi Sándor, em Budapeste. Entrou secretamente na Ordem Cisterciense a 10 de fevereiro de 1952. Obteve o diploma de bibliotecário na Universidade Eötvös Lóránd em 1955. Posteriormente, foi bibliotecário em Mezőkövesd, enquanto secretamente prosseguia a sua formação na Ordem. Fez os seus primeiros votos a 12 de fevereiro de 1953. Deixou o país em 1956. Entre 1956 e 1963, obteve o doutoramento em Teologia em Roma, no Pontificio Ateneo Sant’Anselmo. Fez os votos perpétuos a 18 de setembro de 1960. Foi ordenado sacerdote a 2 de outubro de 1960 na capela privada do bispo Franz Žak, de St. Pölten. Em 1963, mudou-se para os EUA, onde permaneceu até à sua morte.
