Biographical data
Born into a family of Catholic clergy, he entered the order at the age of 18 on June 30, 1944, after graduating from the Cistercian high school in Buda. He completed his novitiate in Manréza. From 1947 to 1949, he studied philosophy in Szeged, then left for abroad. He volunteered to serve as a missionary in Japan. His decision was influenced by the fact that the two atomic bombs dropped had caused immense suffering to the Japanese people. He was the first Hungarian Jesuit to go directly to Japan; he did not arrive in the country via China. From 1950 to 1952, he studied Japanese in Yokosuka, and in his second year there, he also taught English at the college. From 1952, he studied for five years in Canada and then in the United States. He was ordained a priest in Canada on June 19, 1955. He took his final vows on August 15, 1961. He returned to Hungary in 1993. He played a significant role in the reestablishment of the Jesuit Order in Hungary, the introduction of the “Married Couples’ Weekend” movement, and the founding of the pastoral care training program at Semmelweis University.
