Biographical data

Antal Rényes was born on September 26, 1928, in Budapest. He entered the Society of Jesus on August 14, 1947, and began his novitiate at Manréza in Zugliget. In the summer of 1949, due to intensifying state crackdowns on religious orders, the leadership of the Hungarian Jesuit Province decided to send several young Jesuits abroad. On August 14, 1949, Antal Rényes was a member of the first group of seven who traveled from Kelenföld Station to Hegykő and then successfully crossed the Austrian border on foot.

He studied philosophy in Pullach in 1951 and in Leuven from 1952 to 1953. From 1954 to 1955, he served as the leader of the Marian Congregation in Innsbruck, and in 1956, he served as subprefect in Feldkirch. From 1957 to 1960, he completed his theological studies in Rome, and on December 6, 1959, he was ordained a priest there. He completed his third probationary year in Münster in 1961, then prepared for his degree examination in Frankfurt in 1962. Between 1963 and 1967, he participated in a two-year program in the history of philosophy in Rome and worked on his doctoral dissertation. Although he produced several thousand pages of manuscripts during his research, he did not complete his dissertation. He lived at the Collegio Bellarmino, and his stay in Rome coincided with the final phase of the Second Vatican Council. He took his final vows on August 15, 1966.

In 1968, he was sent to Argentina, where he taught the history of philosophy at the Jesuit College of San Miguel. Shortly after his arrival, on December 15, 1968, he died unexpectedly. He was forty years old.
